What is an outdoor totem?
An outdoor totem is a freestanding portrait display for outdoor use. It stands on its own base rather than on a wall, so no facade is required — which makes it the answer for entrances, car parks, forecourts and outdoor dining areas. The SMARTENIC Tower Outdoor comes in 55 and 86 inches, single-sided or double-sided.
What do the IP65 and IP66 protection ratings mean on a totem?
The IP rating is defined in the IEC 60529 standard. The first digit covers protection against solid objects: 6 means fully dust-tight. The second digit covers water: 5 means protection against water jets from any direction, 6 means powerful water jets. The SMARTENIC Tower Outdoor is specified at IP65/IP66 and is therefore built for permanent outdoor operation.
What is the point of a double-sided outdoor totem?
A double-sided totem shows an image on both faces. That pays off wherever people or vehicles approach from two directions: in the middle of a pavement, on a traffic island, in a pedestrian zone or on a forecourt. If the totem stands with its back to a wall or fence, the single-sided version is enough. The SMARTENIC Tower Outdoor is available in both.
Does an outdoor totem work in winter?
Yes. Our outdoor displays are rated for an operating range of -30 to +50 degrees Celsius and have integrated heating that switches on automatically in the cold. That prevents condensation inside the enclosure and keeps the electronics operational. Even at double-digit sub-zero temperatures in an Austrian winter the totem keeps running 24/7.
Is an outdoor totem vandal resistant?
The totem can be specified with IK10 impact resistance — the highest level in the IEC 62262 standard. Added to that are tempered safety glass in front of the panel and a closed metal enclosure with no accessible connectors. For busy public locations that is the recommended configuration; inside a fenced company site it is usually not needed.
What has to be prepared before an outdoor totem is installed?
Three things: a load-bearing base with anchoring, a power supply run to the location, and network connectivity. The network runs over Wi-Fi or mobile, so a data cable is not mandatory. Exactly where it is anchored and how power is routed we settle during the site survey — along with any conditions set by the municipality or the landowner.
